How to Remove the Scent of Skunk from Your Pet's Fur

So your animal was outside last night checking out that skunk and got sprayed pretty badly and now you don't know how to get rid of that awful scent? Whatever you do, don't panic I know a few tricks that will rid your pet from the awful scent fast.

Now I know when your pet gets sprayed by a skunk the first thing you want to do is run to the hose and spray your pet down with water to try and remove some of the scent away, but the truth is running to the hose and spraying your pet down will only make the scent of skunk worse.

Baking Soda & Lavender Shampoo

What you want to do is grab a box of arm and hammer baking soda and sprinkle some onto your pet's fur and allow it to stay on the fur for about thirty minutes to absorb the scent of skunk. Don't worry baking soda will not harm your pet in any way. It's pretty safe to use.

Then while your allowing the baking soda to absorb the scent of skunk on your pets fur, go inside and grab some organic lavender shampoo, and if you don't have any organic lavender shampoo just run to your local health food store and pick up a small bottle. If you can't seem to find the shampoo try finding an organic bar of lavender soap and that will work just as well.

The reason you want organic lavender shampoo or soap is because lavender is what is used with skunk spray to make most musky scented perfumes, and will completely rid the scent of skunk from your pet's fur completely.

Anyways, once you have the lavender soap or shampoo your will take the water hose outside and rinse down your pet with water removing all the baking soda from your pet's fur. If you don't have a watering hose outside, I would highly recommend using the bathtub and then washing the bathtub out well after.

Once you have your pet's fur wet, you will then take your organic lavender shampoo or soap and begin soaping up your pets fur really good forming soap bubbles, however you want to be careful around the eyes, nose, and mouth area of your pet. After you're done lathing the fur really well, rinse your pet with water and begin removing all the lavender soap from his or her fur.

Then you will dry your pet off using an old towel and allow your pet's fur to dry. By then most of the scent of skunk should be out of your pets fur, and if not grab a little bottle of organic lavender oil and rub a little through your pets fur. Again these products will not harm your pets in any way.

Tomato Sauce Method

Now if you still find that you couldn't get rid of the smell of skunk with those methods, you could always try the old fashion tomato sauce method, however this might color you pet's fur red for a little while and make your pet smell like tomatoes.

All you would do is take your pet outside and dump tomato sauce over your pet's fur and then rinse with water. Pretty simple, however I find the tomato sauce method doesn't always do the best job.

End Notes

If all else falls take your pet to their pet groomer and the groomer should know what to do to get ride of the skunk scent, but I find the best way to get rid of skunk scent is using baking soda and organic lavender soap.
