Short Story: Apple Town

I always thought scary things only happened in the dark, but day time was fast approaching and I as well as many others was terrified of the creature that lurked around Apple Town on October 31st of each year when the sun shined at its highest point. Every year at this very time as the sun was shining high in the sky ten people would disappear, and every hour after that a skeleton would appear of what remained of one of those ten people who had disappeared during that day.

No one in Apple Town believed this creature lurked during daylight, except for the ones who had seen this creature lurking around with blood dripping and pouring out of him with black flies flying all around killing the ones they loved most. Most of the people from Apple Town thought it was just an old folks tale or scary story being past around until they lost a loved one or two on October 31 during the noontime hour when this creature would lurk.

However, I do know this creature exists and I know for sure it is more than just an old folk's tale being passed along generation after generation in Apple Town. I saw this monster with my own eyes as he pulled the flesh from my sister's bones with one sucking motion from his mouth only leaving the bones behind all attached like a scary white skeleton lying helplessly on the ground. I remember more than just her death. I remember the time and the hour of this day and all the details that will always replay in my mind as I sleep in my bed at night praying to the Lord that my flesh would not be ripped from my bones the same way my sisters was.

I remember the way the creature looked at me with death in his eyes and him whispering softly to himself in a creepy raspy voice "Death is my gift!" I can see him now in my mind as if it were a moment or two ago glancing over at me after devouring my sisters flesh with blood pouring out from every square inch of his body pondering whether or not he has time to kill and eat one more before darkness falls and he can't see anymore. As the sun went down just minutes before my sister died the creature left leaving the bones behind and me alive. For this day I will remember for the rest of my life and it has been my mission to rid this creature from my town and everyone's life.

Now once again it's October 31 and I as well as many others from this town are afraid for our lives, but I know it's time to use my fear to banish this creature out of this town and to keep him from taking anymore flesh from our bones. As noontime approached people were getting ready for Halloween parties and trick or treat night. I and some others were preparing to keep ourselves safe from this monster, and the only way to do that is to surround our houses with salt and shut off all the lights.

As many of the people from Apple Town prepare themselves for this monster I was out looking for him. I went to the sunniest spot of the town throughout the day and he couldn't be found. I thought maybe this flesh eating creature went away, but them I can across a white skeleton lying on the ground. A warm tingly feeling went up and down my body and my teeth began to chatter and as I glanced around. There was the creature that had sucked the life right from my sister, but now with a pal.

The sweat began to dip from me and now not only one flesh eating creature was ready to attack, but two were. All I had in my pockets was a couple handfuls of salt and darkness wasn't about to fall until six o clock. I began to panic and run towards the town, but the creatures began to follow. I knew I had to do something fast but didn't know what. I looked over to my left and there were no buildings. I looked over to my right and there was no place to hide. I looked in front of myself and about seventy feet away was an old hollow tree. I began running as fast as I could but I kept falling and the creatures kept approaching faster and faster. Soon I could hear these creatures whispering in a raspy voice chanting together "Death Is My Gift! Death Is My Gift!" And they started to get louder and closer. I thought for a few second I am never going to make it to the hollow tree, but just as one bloody flesh eating creature reached out for me I had already dove into the hollow tree and tucked into the back of it as I possible could.

As I sat tucked away in the hollow tree I could see their hands with blood dripping down from them and black flies swarming around them reach into the hollow tree and try to grab me, but they couldn't. I keep hearing the chant "Death Is My Gift!" I began to shake uncontrollably and kept telling myself to wake up it is just a dream, but the more I did that the more I realized it wasn't. I began to think that I was going to be stuck in this hollow tree until darkness fell or until one of the creature or both sucked the life right out of me as well.

Then I quickly notice after panicking that the tree I was tucked away in wasn't just hallow from the side, but also hollow from the top where the sun could shine in the most, but it wasn't yet because it wasn't at its highest point in the sky yet. I knew as soon as it was the inside of the tree that I thought would be a safe place to hide away in wasn't anymore. Soon the sunshine would be being through it and I would be able to see right through the top of this tree and the creatures would be able to come in a grab me and suck the flesh right out of me the same way they did my sister. I began to panic more and more and wondering how I was going to get out of this mess. All I wanted to do was rid the creatures from Apple Town, but now I began to think I had brought them to my own death.

As the sun shined into the tree more and more from the top I began to see that this tree didn't have just me in it, but more flesh eating creatures. I knew now I had a death wish and thought for sure I was going to die and only my white scary skeleton would remain. I started throwing all the salt I had in my pockets at these creatures that were standing outside this old hallow tree glaring and whispering to me. With each toss of salt at them they began to step away groaning and moaning in pain. I began stepping out of the tree and running down the hill towards town again knowing this time I would either make it or not with only one handful of salt left in my pocket to protect myself one last time.

As I kept on running I started to look back and notice not one creature was following, not two creatures were following, but all ten creatures followed me. The blood in my body was rushing and the sweat was pouring from me. I knew if I went back to town ten people would die including me and this nightmare would replay itself over and over every year on October 31 in Apple Town during day light. I decide fast that inside of heading towards down I would head to the beach where I could lead them into the cold dark salt water ocean where possibly they would all drowned and be banished from my town forever.

I began running faster and faster hoping my plan would work and knew the sun was now at its highest point and from here on out if would be going down again. I knew soon night fall would be here and these flesh eating creatures would soon disappear until next year, but I didn't want there to be another year like the last ones. I wanted these monsters gone. The faster I ran the faster the creatures came after me. With every running step I took another creature was creepy rapidly closer, but I kept running. The creature kept whispering and chanting "Death is My Gift." I ran faster and faster. I was one hundred feet from the ocean and one of the flesh eating creatures had gotten me with his blood dripping hands. The creature grip was holding onto me so tight I couldn't move, but that one handful of salt inside my pocket began slipping out. Soon I heard the this creature scream and moan like never before and he tossed me down and I knew for sure I had only moments to get away and keep heading towards the beach and directly into the dark salt watered ocean before the other creature caught up to me.

Fifty feet away from the ocean I was know. I felt like I had been running for days on end and thought this nightmare wouldn't end. Faster and Faster I ran. Twenty five feet away now and the creatures were still following behind. Ten feet away I began to feel relieved, but still was hoping this plan would work. Five feet away, four feet away, three feet away, two feet away, one foot away, and now I am knee high in salt water and the creatures are still coming at me.

The one creature was in the dark salt water ocean and began screaming. Then two and three and four were in the salt water ocean screaming. Then the rest of them were, but all they were doing is screaming and moaning in pain. They weren't dying at all. I began swimming out further into the ocean and they still followed behind screaming and moaning and whispering "Death Is My Gift." I swam further and further into the ocean until I couldn't see these flesh eating creatures anymore and than I swam back to shore. Once I was on shore I looked back into the ocean and realized these monsters were not dead but fifteen feet under water screaming, moaning, crying, and chanting, and in the distance you could hear them faintly, but none of them came back onto the shore.

As I watched from the shorelines to see if these creatures would reappear I noticed they weren't going to it was dark once again in Apple Town and soon a new day would be here. You know what this means we won't know if these flesh eating creatures would reappear until next year on this very day when the sun is shining brightly in the sky. So, until then I guess we will all sleepy safely in our beds fearing for another October 31 when possibly these flesh eating creatures could reappear.
