Importance of Disinfecting Your Sponge

Sponges are convenient little absorbent cleaning tools to use for cleaning up all kinds of messes in a household from the bathroom to the kitchen. However, every time a sponge is used for cleaning purposes it ends up collecting harmful germs and bacteria along with your messes too. One of the ways you can disinfect your sponge after each use is with tea tree oil disinfectant sponge rinse. Not only does the rinse cleanse and kill the harmful bacteria in your sponge, but it also enhances the life of the sponge so you can use it longer. After all, sponges can be expensive and having to replace each sponge after each use can become costly.

Creating a Tea Tree Oil Sponge Rinse

The ingredients I use to create my tea tree oil sponge rinse all contain antibacterial, antiviral and antiseptic properties, which are properties needed to kill harmful bacteria and germs collected on the sponge while you used it to cleanse the surfaces in your home.

Those ingredients are twenty drops of tea tree oil, 5 drops of lavender oil, and five drops of peppermint oil and 5 drops of geranium oil. You will also need four cups of hydrogen peroxide, which is also a disinfectant. These ingredients I always have on hand, but if you do not you can pick the essential oil up at an herbal shop and hydrogen peroxide up at a local pharmaceutical store.

Once you have all these ingredients gathered you can make the rinse. To make the rinse, pour all the ingredients into a medium sized bowl and combine them together with a spoon. After, you should have a clear sponge rinse with a strong tea tree oil herbal scent. Once the rinse is made leave it in the bowl and it is ready to use.

Using the Sponge Rinse

My favorite way to use the sponge rinse is to simply place the sponge in the bowl of rinse and allow it to soak for an hour on each side. As it soaks in the rinse the germs and bacteria will be killed making the sponge sanitary to use again for cleaning whatever it is you need to clean such as your dishes or toilet bowl.

You can make and use a batch of sponge rinse anytime you feel your sponge needs disinfecting. I cleanse my sponge after a couple uses because I have a weak immune system and coming in contact with germs and bacteria often causes me to get sick. Keeping my sponge cleaning is one of the ways I can make sure the surfaces in my home actually get clean without spreading harmful germs and bacteria everywhere. However, you can disinfect your sponges as often as you feel you need too.

Although, once your sponge starts smelling or falling apart it is best too simply replace it. I typically replace my bath sponge once per month.

Bottom Line

Sponges become gross and germy fast. Disinfecting your sponge with a tea tree oil disinfectant once in awhile can help prevent the sponge from collecting and spreading germs and bacteria everywhere while you are cleaning surfaces in your home. After all, the purpose of using a sponge is to get things clean and not dirty. Keeping your sponge clean will keep your home surfaces clean too and you healthy.
