Natural Ways to Cleanse the Coffee Maker

I use my coffee pot for brewing up fresh herbal teas and coffees throughout the day and evening hours. After using the coffee pot for a week straight I like to clean it well from the stains and odors it may have using my homemade coffee pot cleaner. It helps deeply cleanse the pot without leaving any kind of residue or funny flavor behind inside of it. Best of all, it keeps the appliance shiny and looking new.

Ingredients and Materials Needed

The ingredients you will need to make the cleaner are vinegar and citrus fruits such as lemon, lime, oranges or grapefruits. I prefer using a blend of lemons and limes for a lemon lime scented one, but you could do a grapefruit or orange citrus cleanser if you prefer. You will also need some distilled water to, which you can find at most drug stores and grocery stores.

The materials you will need are a citrus juicer, large clean glass jar with a lid and a mixing spoon. However, if you cannot find a glass jar, just use a plastic bottle with a cap instead.

Instructions

To make the cleaner, juice two citrus fruits of your choice and pour the juice into the jar or bottle of your choice. After, measuring out a cup of vinegar and pour that into the jar or bottle as well along with a cup of distilled water. Once all the ingredients are in the jar or bottle, give the ingredients a gentle stir with the mixing spoon, or put the lid or cap onto the container and give the ingredients a gentle shake together. After, you will have a lovely citrus smelling coffee pot cleaner to use for cleaning your coffee pot out with on a weekly basis, or whenever you are able too use it.

Cleaning Instructions

When it comes time to cleaning the coffee pot, pour the cleaner into the water department of the appliance until it reaches the full water line. If it does not, top it off with more distilled water. After, turn your coffee pot on and allow the cleaner and heat of the coffee pot to gently, yet effectively cleanse and deodorize the pot until it is squeaky clean again.

The reason why these ingredients help cleanse coffee pots well is because citrus fruits contain an acid known as citric acid that helps disinfect and cleanse. The vinegar in the cleaner contains an acid known as acetic acid, which helps kill harmful fungus such as mold and mildew that can build up in the appliance if it is not cleansed properly or often enough. Vinegar also helps kill harmful bacteria while removing coffee stains leaving the coffee pot squeaky clean and shiny. Both ingredients also have the ability to deodorize and remove any unwanted flavorings from the appliance so when you go to brew a fresh pot of tea or coffee, your brew will not taste funny. Distilled water is used simply because it is gentler when it comes to cleaning glass pots since it is much softer water than hard water. However, tap water can be used instead if distilled water cannot be found at all.

Now, once your coffee pot is done with the cleaning cycle and the pot is left filled with the cleaning agent, simply dump out and fill up the water department of the appliance again, but this time with distilled water. After, turn the appliance on and let the distilled water rinse and shine up the coffee pot so you can be sure the cleaner is out of it. Once the second cycle is complete, you should have a squeaky clean coffee pot to use for brewing up your favorite hot beverages.

End Notes

To help keep your coffee pot clean and sanitized it is best to use the cleaner weekly, but if you cannot, do it as soon as you have time. Nothing is worse than a cup of hot coffee or tea in the morning that does not taste fresh and full of the pleasant flavor it is suppose to have.
