Pets are our best furry friends that provide unconditional love and laughter, which is why it is so important to protect them against fleas and ticks. One of the ways I protect my loving kitty cats from fleas and ticks is with a homemade herbal flea and tick repellent spray. Not only does the spray prevent fleas and ticks from coming in contact with my furry pals, but it also helps treat fleas and ticks if your furry pal is exposed to them and you need a natural method to treat them. After all, I do not like using the over the counter flea and tick medication provided by pet stores and veterinarians simply because they contain harmful substances.Essential Oils Needed for Making the Flea and Tick Repellent Spray
The essential oils needed for making the flea and tick repellent spray all depends on what your furry pal prefers. You do not want to use an essential oil on your kitten, puppy, and cat or dog that they do not like because some essential oils can make them not feel good. I know that with my cats they do not like the scent of lavender on them because it is too strong. When I put it on them to repel insects, they fall asleep or like it off. You have to be very careful with using essential oils on your pets, but with caution being used and with the right essential oils, you can safely use them to repel ticks and insects.
The most common essential oils used to repel fleas and ticks away from our furry friends are lavender, peppermint, wintergreen, citronella, penny-royal, geranium, lemongrass, citrus, cedar, tea tree oil and eucalyptus.
To choose a scent your pet likes leave the bottles open on a hard stable surface and bring your pet over to the bottles. I know my cats are always curious and love smelling different things. Typically, when pets do not, like a certain scent, they turn away from it and when they do they keep smelling it. The scents my cats prefer are peppermint and citrus. Those two essential oils are what I use too make the repellent spray. The spray ends up smelling like citrus mint, which is very uplifting.
However, if you cannot figure out what essential your pet likes the most simply choose a gentle one like citrus, peppermint, cedar or lemongrass.
Making the Flea and Tick Repellent for Pets
To make the flea and tick repellent for pets you will need the essential oils your pet prefers and a gallon of distilled water. You will also need a clean empty spray bottle, which you can find at your local pharmaceutical store.
Once you have the right oils, distilled water and spray bottle, carefully measure out four cups of the distilled water and pour it into the spray bottle. After, add ten drops of each essential oil you prefer using into the bottle of water. Then, place the spray cap onto the bottle and give the ingredients a good shake together. After, you will have your homemade natural earth and pet friendly flea and tick repellent spray.
Using the Repellent Spray
The best way I find to use the repellent spray is too carefully spray your furry pal down inside with the spray, but being carefully of their eyes, nose and mouth. Once your pet is sprayed down lightly with the spray, take a grooming brush and brush it into the fur well to in sure they will not come back inside with fleas or ticks on them when you let them out to explore the yard or woods with you. If you end up getting some of the spray on you, do not worry because this repellent is people friendly too and can help repel insects away from you too while you enjoy your time outdoors.
Precautions
You should never use essential oils on your pets without it being diluted with water first. Essential oils along can be too overpowering in scent for your pet and cause them headaches and allergies. Never use an essential oil your pet does not like on them. Sticking to these simple warnings can help keep your pet safe when essential oils need to be used to prevent fleas and ticks naturally.
