Homemade Cinnamon Swirl Bread Recipe

Cinnamon swirl bread is the best. My favorite part is the cinnamon swirls in the middle that are full of sweet flavor and buttery goodness. The bread is so light and airy too. A slice of this bread just melts in your mouth, but you could use a few slices to make cinnamon swirl French toast as well. If you would like to have your own homemade cinnamon swirl bread just follow the simple steps below.

Step #1 Creating the Buttery Dough

Buttery Dough Recipe
Ingredients
  • 2 ½ Tablespoons of Sugar
  • 1 Teaspoon of Salt
  • 3 cups of All Purpose Flour
  • 2 Teaspoons of Dry Active Yeast
  • ¼ Cup to ½ Cup of Warm Water (Liquids you will add into the dry ingredients slowly.)
  • 1 Cup of Milk or Heavy Cream (Again, liquids are poured into the dry ingredients slowly.)
  • 5 Tablespoons of Melted Butter
  • 1 Egg

Directions

Instructions for Making Butter Dough in a Bread Machine

1. Pour dry ingredients into the bread machines bread pan.
2. Plug in the bread machine and turn it onto the dough menu setting.
3. Add in the egg and melted butter.
4. Press the start button to the bread machine to begin mixing the ingredients together.
5. Add in the milk and water slowly. Make sure you alternate. A little bit of warm water first and next a bit of milk. Do this until your dough ball forms and pulls away from the sides. If you find the dough gets mushy, do not panic! Just add a little bit of flour. You want your dough to have a smooth appearance. After, let the dough do its thing in the bread machine. The bread machine will knead and punch the dough around for about an hour to get all that goodness going on inside of it. Once the dough is ready, the bread machine will beep. Then it is onto the next step. By the way, you buttery dough should have a slight yellowy color and be smooth and elastic like in texture.

Step #2 Rolling Out the Dough

Now, you want to flour the counter top surface where you will be rolling out your buttery dough. I use a dough mat for easier clean up, but you do not have too. It is totally optional.

Next, dump the smooth dough out onto the floured surface and roll it out until it is about 1/4 inch thick. Make sure it rolls out even and kind of in a rectangular shape. After, it is onto the next step so get excited!

Step # 3 Sprinkling on some Goodness

You need to sprinkle on a good even layer of cinnamon sugar all over the surface of the dough. I use about a 1/2 cup to a cup of cinnamon sugar, but you can use more or less. I just find those amounts work the best.

Step #4 Let's Get Rolling

Are you ready? It is time to roll the dough up tightly like the photo below until you get a long cinnamon sugar
filled log. So, keep rolling, rolling, rolling!

Step #5 Cut the Ends Off

Now, with a sharp knife slice the ends off! About a 1/4 inch off the ends should be enough. Follow the example below.

Step # 6 For a Horse Shoe Shape

Now just form a horse shoe shape and cut the dough in halve right down the middle of the horse shoe. View example below.

Step #7 Grease and Sprinkle Cornmeal into Two Bread Loaf Pans

Grease two bread loaf pans with shortening or butter. Then sprinkle a tablespoon of cornmeal into each of them. After, give the loaf pans a good shake to coat all the sides of them. This will help prevent the breads from sticking to the pans. After, take each cinnamon filled dough log and sticking them folded sided down into the pans like the photo below.

Step #8 Let the Breads Rise!

Set the bread dough aside and allow it to rise and double in size, or at least fill the whole pan. This takes about an hour to an hour and a half in a warm area. I use the warm setting on my oven to help my dough rise quicker. You may also do the same.

Step #9 Bake the Breads

Next, bake the breads in a 350-degree oven for 30-minutes. After remove them from the pans and place them onto a cooling wrack. Allow the breads to completely cool before slicing them open and enjoying the goodness.
